Striking the balance between ancient and modern living.
We were approached by our clients (with a typically growing family) who were looking to create more living space - but with a unique set of constraints on the home they wanted to remain in. The challenges included a relatively small plot, along with a steeply sloping site, topped off with the physical (and planning) challenges that always accompany 'thatch timber frame cottage'.
Our approach was to turn their existing living arrangement on its head, whereby the original kitchen became a master-suite and a new lower floor was created underneath fifty percent of the old cottage.
The architectural design emphasises that juxtaposition of old and new throughout; no more so than with the use of reclaimed materials - to face the ground retaining piles and concrete reinforced structure below ground - along with the integration of glass between the original timber frame walls.
We provided full (and very sympathetic) construction project management during the build, as the clients continued to live in the remainder of the property during the construction period.
