Fashioning a contemporary home from a former coach house.

The Coach House was developed on the site of an original Victorian coach house and stable block, for a client looking for contemporary, open-plan living.

Our original appointment was to obtain planning approval - with the planning constraints of being located next to an SSI and in an AONB - to covert the stables and coach house into a dwelling. Approval was given, after which the client then sold the property.

Subsequently the purchaser became our new client with a brief to develop the open plan scheme, with its internal balcony, we tailored a design scheme to suit his family requirements - five bedrooms with master suite, gym, kitchen living area, utility rooms, a grand sitting room, home office and a music room.

With the design agreed we revised the planning application and obtained permission to demolish the existing building and rebuild using the original ‘form’ under the proviso we maintained the ridge height.

The rebuild allowed us to introduce BREEAM standards to the fabric, over a steel frame which maximised the roof space available now within the envelope. The new entry / hallway sequence maximises loft space, with a bridge between both wings of the house and glazing that frames the old oak tree in the garden - which also directly relates the new modern interior lines to the formal garden.

A new glazed courtyard elevation opens to provide a seamless relationship between inside and outside, for both family life and entertaining, letting out to the re-landscaped grounds.
